10 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Wedding Photographer

Choosing a wedding photographer is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when planning your big day. Long after the cake is gone and the flowers have wilted, your photos will be the lasting memory of every joyful, emotional, and unforgettable moment. But how do you find the right photographer for your style, budget, and personality?

Here are 10 essential questions to ask before hiring a wedding photographer—not only to help you make the best choice, but to ensure you and your partner feel confident and stress-free on your wedding day.

1. Can We See a Full Wedding Gallery?

Why it matters: Highlight reels are easy to curate—but real weddings tell the full story. Ask to see at least one or two complete galleries so you can evaluate consistency, storytelling, and how they capture both big and small moments. You want to check that the images appearing on social media are from real weddings, and not just photoshoots.

2. What’s Your Photography Style?

Every photographer has a signature approach—whether it's documentary, editorial, fine art, or traditional. Make sure their aesthetic aligns with your vision.

Tip: Use Pinterest or Instagram to define your preferred style before this conversation.

3. How Do You Handle Low-Light or Challenging Conditions?

From candlelit ceremonies to rainy receptions, weddings don’t always happen in ideal conditions. Ask how they manage lighting and difficult environments—and request examples. For me, my gear and my experience is how I manage low lighting situations.

This is one of the most overlooked wedding photography tips that separates amateurs from professionals.

4. What’s Included in Your Packages?

Some photographers offer all-day coverage, while others limit hours. Understand exactly what's included—second shooters, albums, engagement sessions, and how many edited images you’ll receive. My full day wedding package is not set to a number of hours, I prefer to be more flexible and I like to stay until I feel ready to leave!

5. What’s Your Turnaround Time for Photos?

Waiting months for your wedding photos can be painful when the anticipation is high! Get a clear timeline, and ask if sneak peeks are included shortly after the event. I deliver clients a sneak peak gallery within 1 week, and the full gallery is normally delivered within 6 weeks.

6. Are You Insured and Do You Have Backup Equipment?

This is a must. A professional wedding photographer should carry liability insurance and backup gear in case of technical issues. It’s peace of mind you don’t want to skip. Of course - I have all of these!

7. Will You Be the One Shooting Our Wedding?

Some studios have multiple photographers. Be sure you meet the exact person who will be there on your big day—and that you feel comfortable with them.

8. What Happens If You Can’t Make It on the Day Of?

Life happens. Ask what their contingency plan is in case of emergency, illness, or unforeseen events.

9. Can You Walk Us Through Your Booking Process?

From deposit to contract to timeline planning, a solid booking process shows professionalism and helps set expectations on both sides.

Knowing how to choose a wedding photographer also means choosing someone organized and communicative.

10. How Do You Work With Other Vendors and Stay Discreet?

A great wedding photographer knows how to collaborate seamlessly with planners, videographers, and venue staff—and blend into the background while still capturing every magic moment. I love meeting and working with different suppliers, the most important thing is that everyone comes together as a team.
