BEST WEDDING VENUES IN DORSET FOR NATURAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Dorset holds a special place in my heart. The rolling countryside, the dramatic coastline, the hidden manor houses tucked away in valleys — it's one of the most naturally beautiful counties in England, and it's only a short drive from my Hampshire base. I've photographed some truly magical weddings in Dorset, and I always jump at the chance to work there. The light, the landscapes, and the venues are all incredible.

If you're planning a Dorset wedding and wondering where to start with venues, here are my recommendations from a photographer's perspective — the places that not only look stunning on the day, but photograph beautifully too.

MAPPERTON HOUSE & GARDENS, BEAMINSTER

Mapperton is genuinely one of the most breathtaking venues I've ever worked at. Nestled in a valley in West Dorset, this Jacobean manor house was voted Britain's finest manor house by Country Life magazine — and when you see it, you understand why. The Italianate terraced gardens cascading down the hillside are unlike anything else in the country. They're dramatic and romantic and completely unique.

The house itself is full of character — it's been home to the same family (the Earl and Countess of Sandwich) for generations, so it feels like a real home rather than a corporate venue. You can get married in the beautiful 12th century All Saints Church right in the grounds, or have a civil ceremony in the Orangery or Coach House. The Coach House works brilliantly for receptions, seating up to 120 guests, and there's also a Garden Pavilion for more intimate celebrations.

From a photography perspective, Mapperton is a dream. Those terraced gardens give you layer after layer of stunning backdrops — stone walls, topiary, water features, and the rolling Dorset countryside stretching out behind. The afternoon light falling across the valley is something I'll never get tired of capturing. It's the kind of venue where every single photo looks like it belongs in a magazine, without any effort at all.

LULWORTH CASTLE, EAST LULWORTH

If you want a wedding venue that feels like something out of a fairytale, Lulworth Castle is it. A 17th century castle set in 1,000 acres of rolling parkland on the Lulworth Estate, with the Jurassic Coast just minutes away — the setting is genuinely epic. I've photographed here many times now and it never gets old. Every single wedding feels completely unique because there's just so much to work with.

The castle itself is beautifully unique. It was partially destroyed by fire in 1929 and has been sensitively restored, which means the interior has this incredible raw, textured quality — exposed chalk and stone walls that create the most dramatic backdrop you can imagine. It's a blank canvas in the truest sense, bathed in natural light, and every couple I've worked with here has styled it completely differently. Whether you go minimal and let the architecture speak for itself or dress it with florals and candles, it always looks absolutely stunning.

For your ceremony, you've got three gorgeous options. You can say your vows inside the castle itself, which is breathtaking. There's also the 18th century Chapel of St Mary's — a beautiful little Catholic chapel just a stone's throw from the castle — and St Andrew's Church, a 15th century church partly designed by Thomas Hardy. Both are full of character and photograph beautifully.

But here's the thing that really sets Lulworth apart — the location. You're minutes from Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, two of the most iconic stretches of coastline in England. I've done couple portraits on those cliffs and beaches, and the results are amazing. The combination of a castle wedding with Jurassic Coast photography is something you simply cannot get anywhere else. The estate parkland is gorgeous too — sweeping lawns, woodland, sea views in the distance — so even without leaving the grounds you have incredible variety.

The castle seats up to 130 for dinner and 150 for the evening party, and it's exclusively yours for the day. The whole experience feels private, grand, and completely magical.

KINGSTON MAURWARD, DORCHESTER

Kingston Maurward is one of Dorset's best kept secrets. An 18th century Georgian manor house set within 750 acres of glorious countryside just outside Dorchester, it has this wonderful combination of grand architecture and a warm, relaxed atmosphere that puts everyone at ease. The parkland approach and sweeping drive immediately set the scene — you know you've arrived somewhere special.

What I love about Kingston Maurward from a photography perspective is the variety. You have five beautiful licensed rooms inside the house, each with their own character, plus two outdoor ceremony locations in the gardens. The gardens themselves are stunning — sweeping grass terraces leading down to a sparkling lake, secret garden nooks, and the most gorgeous views across the rolling Dorset countryside. Your photographer is genuinely spoilt for choice here. I've found so many different corners and backdrops that every wedding I shoot here produces completely different images.

The lake is the real star for couple portraits — that combination of the 18th century house reflected in the water with the Dorset hills behind is just magical, especially in late afternoon light. And the venue offers some lovely extras too — your guests can hire row boats on the lake, play giant garden games, and there's even an alpaca meet and greet if you fancy something a bit different.

Kingston Maurward is exclusively yours for the day, seats up to 100 for a sit-down meal, and the in-house team are fantastic. It's the kind of venue that feels like hosting your wedding at a beautiful country house that happens to belong to you for the day.

THE ITALIAN VILLA AT COMPTON ACRES, POOLE

If you want a wedding venue that feels like you've been transported to the Mediterranean without leaving Dorset, The Italian Villa is it. Set within the stunning Grade II listed gardens of Compton Acres in Poole, this multi award-winning venue is genuinely unlike anything else in the UK. It's elegant, romantic, and has a real sense of occasion — and it's just a stone's throw from the golden beaches at Sandbanks.

The villa itself is spread across three floors of beautiful suites, giving you loads of flexibility for ceremonies and receptions. It seats up to 180 for a wedding breakfast and 250 for ceremonies, and the whole venue is exclusively yours. But it's the Italian Garden that really takes your breath away — perfectly manicured, with beautiful terraces, water features, and a balcony overlooking it all that's just made for wedding photography.

From a photographer's perspective, The Italian Villa is a dream. The gardens are extraordinary — not just the Italian Garden but also a Japanese Garden, a Heather Garden, and a Wooded Valley with waterfalls. That's 10 acres of stunning, themed gardens that change with every season, so the photo opportunities are genuinely endless. I've shot here multiple times and every visit feels different because the planting is constantly evolving. The light on the terraces in the late afternoon is particularly gorgeous.

The proximity to Sandbanks and the Dorset coast means you can also incorporate beach photos if you want — a Mediterranean-style garden wedding with a quick trip to one of the best beaches in England for sunset portraits is a combination that's hard to beat.

SOPLEY MILL, CHRISTCHURCH

Sopley Mill is one of those venues that genuinely surprises people. It's a beautifully restored watermill sat right on the River Avon, surrounded on both sides by the river with the most incredible views across unspoilt water meadows — and there isn't a house in sight. It feels completely private and secluded, and yet it's only ten minutes from Bournemouth and Christchurch. That combination of wild, natural beauty with easy accessibility is really special.

The mill has been lovingly restored by the family who've owned it since 1870, and it still has the original watermill features — stunning oak beams, exposed brickwork, and bags of character across three floors. The top floor seats 100 for your wedding breakfast with views over the meadows, the second floor has the ceremony room and dance floor, and the ground floor is a brilliant chill-out space with a bar. There's also a bridal suite and a gorgeous terrace that's perfect for summer drinks receptions overlooking the river.

What really sets Sopley Mill apart from a photography point of view is the location. The water meadows, the river, the wildness of the landscape — it creates this incredibly atmospheric, romantic backdrop that you just can't get at a manicured country house venue. In summer the terrace and meadows are stunning, and in winter the log fires, candles and twinkly lights make the mill unbelievably cosy and romantic. It's a true blank canvas too — you choose your own caterers, styling, everything — so no two weddings here ever look or feel the same.

It's right on the Hampshire-Dorset border which makes it incredibly easy for me to get to, and I absolutely love working here.

OTHER DORSET VENUES I LOVE

Dorset is packed with incredible venues and I'd love to photograph at more of them. Here are some that are on my wish list:

St Giles House, Wimbourne— St Giles House is a grand 17th-century country mansion near Wimborne, Dorset, long associated with the Earls of Shaftesbury. Set within expansive parkland, it blends classical architecture with beautifully restored interiors and landscaped gardens.

Came House, Dorchester — an enchanting Palladian country house in the heart of Thomas Hardy's Dorset, just ten minutes from the Jurassic Coast. With its roaring fires, twinkling chandeliers, and a unique domed conservatory licensed for ceremonies, it has the most romantic atmosphere. The fact that it's a private home available for exclusive use makes it feel incredibly special.
