Choosing your wedding venue is one of the biggest (and most exciting!) decisions you’ll make while planning your day. As a Wedding Photographer I have been to over 250+ weddings and these are the questions that I would ask!

One of the first things to confirm is how many guests the venue can comfortably hold.
- What is the maximum capacity for the ceremony and wedding breakfast?
- Is the evening reception capacity different?
- Will the space still feel full and atmospheric if your guest list is smaller?
A venue that’s too tight can feel cramped, while one that’s too large can feel empty — finding the right balance is key. This also can instantly rule some venues in/out so it should be one of the first things that you find out.
2. Explore the Different Rooms and Spaces Available
Explore the spaces. Make sure you like the decor, how they feel, the light, and the size of the rooms/areas. Ask what different rooms or areas the venue offers throughout the day:
- Separate ceremony and reception spaces
- Dedicated areas for drinks receptions
- Quiet corners for guests who need a breather
Multiple spaces allow your day to flow naturally and help avoid long room turnarounds that can interrupt the celebration. Don't forget the outside spaces too.

When viewing a venue, take note of:

- The direction the rooms face (morning vs afternoon light)
- How the space feels on a grey or rainy day
Bright, light-filled spaces often photograph beautifully and feel more welcoming for guests. If you like the moody, candlelit vibe then that's great! But most of the time, having a nice level of natural light in the venue makes such a difference to the overall experience (and photos!).

I know a lot of my couples really have liked this idea, as they wanted to wake up the next day surrounded by a few friends and family ready for a nice 'morning after' breakfast! It also can be really beneficial to family members/friends that have young children.
Ask:
- How many rooms are available?
- Are they included or charged separately?
- Is there a bridal suite?
Having accommodation on site means guests can relax, enjoy the party fully, and not worry about taxis at the end of the night.
5. Understand the Party Cut-Off Time
No one wants their wedding night to end too early — so be clear about when the music has to stop. I would personally say that ideally you want to cut off to be midnight or later! 11pm comes around very quickly!
- What time does the party end?
- Is there flexibility to extend (and at what cost)?
- Does the bar close at the same time?
This is especially important if you’re planning a big evening celebration.
6. Ask About Sound Limiters
Sound limiters can be really annoying and quite troublesome if they are set particularly low. It can make performing impossible for bands, and I have even seen parties cut out mid set because the sound has accidentally hit the limit.
Try and find out:
- Is there a sound limiter?
- How sensitive is it?
- Have bands or DJs had issues in the past?
This won’t necessarily be a dealbreaker, but it’s important to know so you can plan your entertainment accordingly.

- Whether this includes staff, suppliers, and furniture

A lot of high end or busy wedding venues choose to only allow clients to choose from a list of trusted Suppliers that they recommend. This is because they have built a good relationship with those suppliers, and they know how to work best in the venue. Catering companies in particular, this is very beneficial for.
Ask the venue:
- Can you bring your own caterers, band, florist, and stylist?
- Is there a recommended or exclusive supplier list?

British weather (or unpredictable weather anywhere!) means a solid Plan B is essential. Make sure there are some indoor or undercover spaces that you like, and a few spots that would work for photos, just in case you are unlucky and get persistent rain!

- Will they still feel special and not like an afterthought?
- Can everything be moved inside smoothly if it rains?
